According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (2018), a total of 87,000 women were intentionally killed in 2017. More than half of them (58 per cent) ̶ 50,000 ̶ were killed by intimate partners or family members, meaning that 137 women across the world are killed by a member of their own family every day. Only in Mexico, 10 women are mordered everyday on average Violence against women and girls is one of the most serious, widespread, entrenched and tolerated human rights violations in the world. This violence is both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality and discrimination. This is a fact, that I have personally observed in Chiapas, Mexico where girls and women er seen as weak and economically dependent. When I was little and even as an adult, sometimes I hear comments such as «meramente mujer» meaning that because I am a woman I am limited for what I could achieve in life. There is a lot we can write and say about gender inequality and discrimination, and we all know the negative impact this issue has on the social and economic development in all societies. In an effort to mitigate this problem, EVOMAR joins the struggle of all women in Mexico and around the world. That is why, this 8 of marsh, we embrace the handwork of Mexican women and celebrate their courage, perseverance, effort and dedication in all that is created with their hand. By providing a fair wage, these women have the opportunity to work from home. This gives them the opportunity to be economically dependent, and at the same time, take care of their small girls.
